why plantbased?

you know that rå is a company that offers 100% plant based bowls and stands for fast, healthy, and sustainable nutrition. but did you know that when we started out in 2018, we were offering shrimps, smoked salmon, feta cheese, boiled eggs, and teriyaki chicken?

just like most people, we were used to have all kinds of animal products on the table; cereals with milk in the morning, a chicken curry or spaghetti bolognese for lunch, and some bread with ham and cheese for dinner. sounds familiar?

…a pretty terrible diet when we think of it right now, but we will come to this topic in another blog article.

the point is, when we founded rå in 2018, with the vision to inspire people to eat healthier, it seemed logical to also offer shrimps and chicken. we were convinced that “meat is healthy and part of a balanced diet” - but is that actually true?

back then we received many orders with “extra chicken please”, and our top selling product was by far the tokyo teriyaki bowl with chicken. we also had the teriyaki chicken in most of our own bowls and i am not lying, we really enjoyed the taste of it.

however, at some point it started to feel getting uncomfortable to cut these huge amounts of chicken breasts every morning. it made us start thinking…

…how much meat goes through the kitchens of other restaurants, especially thinking of the big fast food chains.

by the end of 2019 we decided to stop selling all kinds of animal products. the decision was not easy, especially not from a business perspective, but it just felt the right to do.

why? three reasons.

1 | animals.

it’s simple, if you eat animals, they have die for it. even though the chicken was “organic” and ”free range”, it still went to the slaughterhouse. animals, just like we humans, fear death and we believe that all sentient creatures have a right to life and freedom.

2 | environment.

everyone talks about sustainability, but who actually acts about it? The production of animal products places a heavy burden on the environment - from crops and water required to feed the animals, to the transportation and other operations involved from farm to table. The vast amount of animal food required for meat production is a significant contributor to deforestation, species extinction, and habitat loss.

3 | health.

studies have shown that vegans in general have lower body mass index, cholesterol and blood glucose compared to omnivores. Vegans are less likely to be diagnosed with ischemic heart disease (what happens when plaque narrows your arteries), and they have an 15 percent lower risk of cancer than omnivores.

if you eat a balanced vegan diet, it sets you up with the best possible way towards living healthier, for longer.
