cherry tomatoes 🍅

origin:

although normal-sized tomatoes have first been domesticated by the incas and aztecs in the puebla-veracruz area of mexico hundreds of years ago, for cherry tomatoes it is a slightly different story. they were first developed in israel in 1973 and were meant to be the first kind of tomato that was resistant to a devastating virus. soon after, around the 1990’s, cherry tomatoes were introduced to the worldwide market. they gained popularity quick as they tasted sweeter than regular tomatoes and had a practical bite-sized shape.

cherry tomatoes, much like normal tomatoes, grow best in well-drained soil in a sunny spot. in fact, the more sun the tomato plant gets, the more fruits it will grow. a fun fact about tomatoes is that they pair well with onion, garlic and basil. but that is not only in the kitchen! when grown together, they develop stronger and better resistant to diseases.

properties:

1 cup of cherry tomatoes (about 150 grams) contains about 25 calories, 6 grams of carbohydrates, 1 gram of protein, 2 grams of fibre and less than 1 gram of fat. since tomatoes are very low calorie with a high water content, yet at the same time flavorful with a sweet taste, they form a great food for weight loss. they promote satiety and a great taste. vitamins and minerals in tomatoes include Vitamin A and C, calcium, iron, potassium and natural sodium.

benefits:

vitamin c is a vitamin absolutely essential for a healthy immune system. that is why many foods provide it. one serving of cherry tomatoes delivers 25% of the daily recommended intake for vitamin c. vitamin a on the other hand helps with a normal vision, the immune system and reproduction. tomatoes may also be a true beauty food as a study found that the combinations of tomatoes and olive oil helps protect the skin against sun damage by boosting the collagen production.

use:

you may know the classic golden combinations of tomatoes with oregano, basil, garlic or oregano. but did you know that tomato also tastes great with broccoli and feta cheese, or quinoa, cucumber, fresh mint and some healthy seeds?

Maritza Kolenbrander: Food Coach at Plantifulplan
